The Italy pavilion at World Showcase is a stunning display of architecture. Visitors familiar with the real Italy may recognize elements of Venice which stand out at the showcase entrance, including the Doge's Palace with accurately detailed décor and a scaled-down version of the Campanile (bell tower) of St. Mark's Square.
It is a pleasure just to stroll these romantic grounds, with ornate Venetian bridges, gondolas, colorful barber poles, and a sculpture of the Lion of St. Mark guarding the pavilion from atop a column. Other buildings represent various regions in Italy. For example, the stairway and portico adjoining the Doge's Palace are typical of Verona; and the town hall overlooking the promenade is reflective of Northern Italy. The garden wall enclosing the piazza is typical of Rome and Florence. Sculptures include a heroic version of Bemini's Neptune Fountain, based on the original in Florence and the Fountain of Trevi in Rome.
But what would this Italian showcase be without the glorious Italian restaurants? L'Originale Alfredo di Roma Ristorante, reminiscent of the Florentine style, serves a variety of fine cuisine. Nearby, a variety of shops sell items such as Venetian beads and glasswork, leather purses and belts, and Perugina cookies and chocolate kisses.
