Japan is noted around the world for its serene landscapes, ornate architecture with attention to detail, its history, and its powerful culture. As such, the Japan showcase does an excellent job in bringing this enthralling country to life, from nearly the other side of the globe. As visitors approach the pavilion, they will immediately notice the brilliant vermilion torri gate, derived from the design of Hiroshima Bay's Itsukushima shrine. Complimenting this architectural wonder is a magnificent Japanese landscape of rocks, trees, pebbled streams, pools, and hills, though all the foliage and boulders are actually American.
Another architectural highlight is the huge five-story pagoda which dominates the pavilion. Based on the eighth-century Horyuji Temple in Nara, the stark blue pagoda symbolizes the five elements of Buddhist belief - earth, water, fire, wind, and sky. Visitors will delight in the spontaneous performances of drums and gongs and dance by the Genroku Hanami players. There are also a wide variety of restaurants and shops to enjoy.
